What is Parent-Interaction Child Therapy?

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based treatment designed for young children (typically ages 2-7) experiencing behavioral challenges, difficulties with emotion regulation, and inattention/hyperactivity. This treatment is particularly effective for families looking to foster a positive, nurturing environment while addressing problematic behaviors. Learn about some of the top behavioral challenges families experience below.

parent-child interaction therapy

defiance

Defiance is characterized by behaviors such as saying “no” to requests, deliberate disobedience, or frequent arguments with authority figures. It can strain the parent-child relationship and create a power struggle. PCIT teaches parents to remain consistent and firm while reinforcing positive behaviors.

impulsivity

Impulsivity involves acting without thinking, like interrupting or taking risks, commonly seen in ADHD. PCIT fosters better self-control in children while guiding parents in encouraging thoughtful actions.

AGGRESSION

Aggression includes behaviors such as hitting, kicking, biting, or yelling, which can disrupt family dynamics and pose safety concerns. These behaviors often arise from frustration, difficulty expressing emotions, or unmet needs. PCIT helps parents set clear boundaries and teaches children self-regulation skills and appropriate ways to express their emotions.

NonCOmpliance

Noncompliance refers to a child’s refusal to follow directions, ignoring instructions, or deliberately doing the opposite of what is asked. This behavior is often a way for children to test limits or assert control and can make daily routines like meal times or bedtimes challenging. PCIT provides parents with tools to give clear, calm commands and use positive reinforcement to encourage cooperation.

tantrums

Tantrums are intense emotional outbursts that may include crying, screaming, hitting, or throwing objects. These episodes are often triggered by frustration, unmet desires, or difficulty transitioning between activities. PCIT helps parents stay calm during these moments and equips them with strategies to help their child calm down and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

Strengthen your bond, guide your child's behavior, and create a brighter future together with Parent-Child Interaction Therapy.

You May Have Some Questions About Parent-Child Interaction (PCIT)...

In PCIT, parents are coached, in person or virtually, in real-time while interacting with their child in structured activities, such as play. The therapist provides guidance on how to reinforce positive behaviors, manage challenging behaviors, and strengthen the parent-child bond.

PCIT focuses on teaching parents effective strategies for addressing problematic behaviors like defiance or aggression. Through positive reinforcement and consistent discipline, parents learn how to manage behavior in a way that helps children develop emotional regulation and self-confidence.

At Mindwell NYC, PCIT usually takes 12-20 weeks, although the timeline can vary based on the family’s needs. Some families may benefit from the intensive two-week program, which includes daily sessions for faster progress while maintaining the core principles of PCIT.

PCIT can be delivered both in-person and via telehealth, making it accessible to families regardless of location. The therapy structure remains the same whether sessions are conducted in-person or virtually.

Yes, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is suitable for children with a wide range of behavioral challenges, especially those related to externalizing behaviors (i.e., behaviors that are directed outward, such as aggression, defiance, or tantrums).
